Day 1 (Friday) You will fly early morning to Lalibela, and head directly to the mountains surrounding it. You will take a mule ride up to Asheten Maryam Church and enjoy its spectacular views. After this, you will then ride across to the plateau of Lalibela Hudad, where you will spend the afternoon observing the local wildlife, including troupes of Gelada Monkeys, Mountain Hyrax and swooping Lammergeyers.
In the evening, you will be entertained by local villagers over a campfire and under the stars and sleep in a simple hut at Lalibela Hudad.
Day 2 (Saturday) Today you will hike back to Lalibela, visiting a local community home on the way, and follow the mountain people all the way to Lalibelas’ Saturday market, where varied local wares are sold.
The rest of the afternoon will be spent relaxing at Maribela Hotel.
In the evening, you will be invited to visit a local culture house, where traditional dancers and singers will entertain you before retiring to your hotel room.
Day 3 (Sunday) You will start today at sunrise, and visit the Sunday mass before breakfast. The rest of the day will be spent touring the church complex. The UNESCO world heritage site dates to between the 7th and 13th centuries and features full rock hewn but freestanding churches.
For a second night you will stay at Maribela Hotel.
Day 4 After breakfast, it will be possible to visit one last church, Nakutalab church which is built within a cave, on the way to the airport before heading back to Addis Ababa or your next chosen destination.
A tour of the cultural and natural hotspots of the Amaharra region of Northern Ethiopia will allow you to sample some of the finest cityscapes and landscapes that Ethiopia has to offer.
