Offcanvas Section

You can publish whatever you want in the Offcanvas Section. It can be any module or particle.

By default, the available module positions are offcanvas-a and offcanvas-b but you can add as many module positions as you want from the Layout Manager.

You can also add the hidden-phone module class suffix to your modules so they do not appear in the Offcanvas Section when the site is loaded on a mobile device.

Ethiopia has a number of memorably colorful and invigorating festivals that are popular amongst tourists. Festivities often entail jubilant crowds, colorful religious figures, candle lit midnight masses and large communal bonfires.

If your visit coincides with one of these festivals, we will look to amend your itinerary so as to make the most of your stay.

January 7 - Genna (Ethiopian Christmas)

Best experienced at Lalibela where many pilgrims congregate for the occasion.

January 19 (January 20 during leap year) - Timket (Epiphany)

Best experienced in either Lalibela or Gondar, and takes place over 3 days.

Fasilides Baths in Gondar comes alive for the festival.

April 8, 2018 - Fassika (Orthodox Easter)

Best experienced in Axum, Lalibela or Gondar,

Celebrations take place the night before with atmospheric midnight masses.

Palm Sunday (held the preceding Sunday) is best enjoyed at Axum

The midnight mass at Beta medhanialem church in Lalibela is a mesmerizing, once in a lifetime experience.

Week starting 29th August - Ashenda

Best experienced in Mekelle

This celebration sees young girls come out and sing and dance en-mass.

September 11 (September 12 during leap year) - Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash)

New years can be enjoyed in any large city but comes alive in smaller cities like Lalibela where the Meskel Flower (or ade ababai in amharic) colours the landscape with its' distinctive yellow hue.

September 27 (September 28 during leap year) - Meskel (Finding of the True Cross)

Best Experienced in any large city. The enormous bonfire in Meskel Square in Addis, and the candle lit mountain path of Chom’a hill overlooking Mekelle are particularly memorable.

October 6th - The Irreecha Festival

Is the Festival of thanksgiving for the Oromo Ethnic Group of Ethiopia.

Best Experienced in Addis Ababa, where revelers adorning multiple ethnic costumes are on show.

Saints Days:

Your visit might not coincide with one of the above mentioned festivals, but the Orthodox calendar has a vast variety of saint days that are celebrated throughout the year.  Churches named after particular saints will hold candle lit masses and overnight celebrations which can be equally impactful for visitors. Let us know which dates you wish to visit and we will tweak your itinerary to suit.
